Washington Wizards
History
The Washington Wizards got their start in Chicago during the 1961-62 season. The organization would see a variety of name changes and new home towns. In Chicago the team was named the Packers. After their first year of action the Packers would have their first name change. They were renamed the Zephyrs. Change was not quickly over yet for the Zephyrs/Wizards organization. The season after the name change the team moved to Baltimore, Maryland. They were then renamed the Bullets.
Ten years later the Bullets relocated once again to Landover, Maryland. It was here that they were named the Washington Bullets.
The Bullets made their first significant contribution to the NBA during the 1977-78 season. During that season they went 44-38 and were not a favorite to make the Finals. However led by coach Dick Motta the Bullets were heading in that direction. He coined the famous phrase "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings!" and that became the theme for the Bullets. They would go on to defeat the Seattle SuperSonics four games to three in the NBA finals and claim their only championship in team history.
Change was once again at work for the Washington based team. In 1997 due to the Washington area being ranked at the top for murders a name change was in store for the organization. The names Seadogs, Express, Mustangs, and Monuments were possibilities but eventually turned down in favor of the Wizards.
The Wizards would have a string of bad luck by giving up on or losing talented players about to enter their prime. Including Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton, Chris Webber and Larry Hughes.
