Utah Jazz

History
The Jazz got their start in New Orleans in 1974. After playing five seasons in New Orleans the team had to relocate to Utah for financial reasons. It was in Utah that the Jazz would become more successful within the NBA.

The Utah Jazz were unsuccessful as a team until their 1983-84 season which was the team's first winning season. They would top the Midwest division and advance to the NBA playoffs. Advancing to the second round the Jazz would then be defeated by the Phoenix Suns.

In 1984 the Jazz drafted one of the team's most successful NBA players, John Stockton. After the 1984-85 season Utah would select Karl Malone. Paired together John Stockton and Karl Malone would form a one two punch of assists and scoring. Stockton would be known for his precision passing and Malone his powerful scoring ability.

During the 1993-94 season the Utah Jazz would trade for Jeff Hornacek who would provide outside shooting from beyong the arc. With these pieces in place the Utah Jazz would look to make a run at the NBA Finals.

Although having elite talent and sweeping through the Western Conference in 1997 and 1998 they could not overcome Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Eventually John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek would retire as Jazz players. Karl Malone would leave through free agency joining the Los Angeles Lakers. Thus in 2003 the Jazz no longer were strong contenders for the Western Conference.
