Sacramento Kings
History
The Sacramento Kings got their start in 1945 as part of the National Basketball League. At that time they were located in Rochester, New York and played as the Rochester Royals. They would eventually join the NBA and win their only league championship in 1951.
The Kings would see their share of NBA legends with Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. Robertson played for the organization in the 1960-61 season. During his stay with the then known Royals organization he performed brilliantly.
In 1985 the Kings moved to their current home of Sacramento. The Kings breakthrough season in Sacramento came with their changes in 1998. Management traded Mitch Richmond for Chris Webber, signed center Vlade Divac and drafted point guard Jason Williams. Peja Stojakovic too would prove himself to be a sharp shooter for the team. More key moves were in the future for the Kings.
During 1998 the famous Maloof brothers Joe and Gavin purchased the Sacramento Kings team.
In 2000 the Kings traded Corliss Williamson to the Toronto Raptors for guard Doug Christie. Christie provided a defensive tenacity to the lineup full of offensive players. Point guard Jason Williams would come under much criticism for his flashy style of play. This led to the trade of Jason Williams to the Vancouver Grizzlies for point guard Mike Bibby. After leading his college team the Arizona Wildcats to an NCAA championship Bibby would provide the stabilizing factor the Kings were looking for.
Guard Bobby Jackson would also provide explosiveness off the King's bench. In their 2001-02 season the Sacramento Kings posted the best regular season record in the NBA at 61-21. However the Kings would be unable to climb past Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and the rest of the Lakers team.
During the 2005 season the Kings would accept a troubled star from the Indiana Pacers. A trade including Peja Stojakovic would be made for Ron Artest.
