Philadelphia 76ers

History
The Philadelphia 76ers basketball team comes from a long generation of basketball. The team got it's start as the Syracuse Nationals in 1939. They were a member of the NBL (National Basketball League). In 1949 they joined the NBA.

The Nationals moved to Philadelphia in 1963 after being purchased by Irv Kosloff. In 1963 the Philadelphia based team would change it's name to the 76ers. The name change was made due to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776.

The 76ers had their best season in 1966-1967. The team was led by Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, and Hal Greer. It would be in that season that the 76ers would win their first NBA championship in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia would again experience greatness in the form of a guard by the name of Julius Erving. In the 1976-77 season that they acquired Erving they would advance all the way to the NBA Finals in yet another exciting season of 76ers fans. However, fans of the team would be treated to an NBA Championship during the 1983 season. Julius Erving and Maurice Cheeks would lead the club in that season.

The 76ers would draft two more all-stars in their history. Obtaining Charles Barkley in the 1984-85 season. However Barkley was not able to advance the team in his tenure with the team. The Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls would prove to be to much for Barkley's 76ers to overcome. Barkley's stay in Philadelphia came to it's end in 1992 being traded to the Phoenix Suns.

Allen Iverson was drafted by the 76ers and entered the 1996-97 season hoping to become the answer for the ball club. Under the coaching of Larry Brown Iverson was able to become one of the premier guards in the NBA. After winning the 2001 Eastern Conference title the relationship between Iverson and coach Larry Brown started to climax. The famed coach would eventually leave the team and join the Detroit Pistons organization.
