Los Angeles Lakers
History
The Los Angeles (LA) Lakers had their start in 1947 when the then owner Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen purchased the Detroit Gems and relocated them to Minneapolis. The Lakers would go on to become the first dynasty in the NBA winning 5 championships in the early 1950's. However they would not relocate to Los Angeles until 1960.
The Lakers would become home to many basketball legendary Hall of Famers such as Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, and Wilt Chamberlain. Possessing such talent in the 1960's would not yield an NBA Championship until their 1972 season which is the year their first championship was won in Los Angeles.
They would later draft a rookie by the name of Earvin "Magic" Johnson in 1979 who would lead the Lakers to five more championships. Magic under the tutelage of coach Pat Riley would possess a flair for fast breaks and crowd pleasing passes.
The Lakers would again regain dynasty status in the years 2000-2002 being led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. However the team was mostly dismantled in the 2004 offseason after being beat in the NBA Finals by the Detroit Pistons.
