Houston Rockets
History
The Houston Rockets entered the NBA scene in 1967. At that time the team did not play in Houston. Instead their home was in San Diego. With their first ever draft pick the Rockets selected a player who would become a future coaching icon with Pat Riley. In their first season they posted a disappointing 67 loss season.
The Rockets would eventually move to Houston in 1971 due to a lack of fan support for the team.
In 1984 the Rockets drafted a promising center Hakeem Olajuwon with their number one draft pick. The 1984 draft was fruitful for the NBA with future stars Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton being selected by other teams. It would take Olajuwon and the rest of the Rockets just ten more years to top the NBA in 1994 with an NBA championship.
During the 1994-95 season the Rockets would trade for guard Clyde Drexler. Drexler would provide the perimeter touch and slashing ability to combine with Olajuwon's inside presence. In that season the Rockets would win their second Championship ring over the Orlando Magic.
After their runs to two championships the Rockets would go into decline. The Rockets would look to shuffle their lineup to compete with other rising western conference teams. However they would not regain their championship form.
In the 2002 draft the Rockets would use their number one pick to select another promising center with Yao Ming. Ming would be instrumental in connecting the NBA with the huge audience in China.
During the 2003-04 season the Rockets would trade Steve Francis for one of the league's premier scorers in Tracy McGrady. Cuttino Mobley was also dealt for Juwan Howard.
